6. S.H.I.E.L.D. Invitation
6. S.H.I.E.L.D. Invitation
"Knock knock knock~"
A slightly hurried knocking sound woke Ji Yuan from his sleep.
Who is it?
Ji Yuan shouted impatiently, "Knocking on the door so early in the morning! Doesn't he know that getting enough sleep is a prerequisite for a good mood all day?"
The door was flung open, and two agents in suits stood straight outside. One of the agents, whom Ji Yuan recognized, was smiling at him.
"Coulson, what do you want so early in the morning? Don't you know it's very impolite to disturb someone's sleep?"
Ji Yuan stared at Coulson outside the door, his tone not very friendly, after all, he was a little grumpy when he woke up.
"Oh, hello Dr. Ji, I'm sorry to bother you. I didn't know it was already 10 a.m. and you were still dreaming."
Coulson apologized first, then made a joke, before pointing to the tough-guy agent next to him: "This is my partner, Grant Ward. I'm bothering you so early to ask you a few questions."
Ji Yuan curled his lip. Sure enough, once Coulson, a senior agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., officially started working, he would always be paired with a Hydra agent.
The man beside him, Grant Ward, is an elite Hydra agent with top-notch combat skills and professional ethics. Judging by his appearance alone, one would never associate him with the terrorist organization Hydra. But the truth is, Agent Ward is a traitor.
"Speak up, what do you want to ask? And Coulson, you really should get some rest. Look at your hairline, if it were any higher you could become a monk. I'm sure you could do a great job."
Ji Yuan stared at Coulson's shiny forehead and teased him.
Cole's face darkened. He was always at a disadvantage with this psychiatrist, and since it was during working hours, he couldn't afford to argue too much.
"Here's the thing, last night we detected an unprecedentedly powerful energy reaction in Hell's Kitchen, just like the Silver Giant's, and the exact location happened to be right next to your house. We'd like to know if you saw or heard anything, as this would be of great help to our work."
Coulson's tone was extremely sincere, fully demonstrating the qualities of a seasoned agent.
"Indeed, there is a bit," Ji Yuan said without hesitation. "I saw a smaller version of the silver giant, only slightly taller than an average adult."
Coulson's eyes lit up with joy, and he was about to go inside to listen carefully to Ji Yuan's story.
"Hey, hey, hey!" Ji Yuan stretched out his hand, stopping Coulson from entering the house. "That's all I know. You don't need to come in. I want to take a nap."
Coulson visibly looked disappointed, and touched his shiny forehead: "Dr. Ji, actually we're here for more than just this one thing; there's another matter that requires your cooperation."
Ji Yuan raised an eyebrow, sensing Coulson's inner elation; it seemed that what was about to happen was a good thing for him.
"Alright, come in."
Ji Yuan wanted to see what Coulson had to say.
Once inside, Coulson closed the door, paused, and looked directly at Ji Yuan with a mysterious smile: "Actually, we know your secret."
"secret?"
Ji Yuan was somewhat surprised. What secret did he have? Ultraman? No, if that was the secret, then Coulson's previous emotions were definitely not disappointment. What else could it be?
"Actually, you've always had superpowers, haven't you?" Coulson smiled at Ji Yuan. "We've investigated, and patients who received psychological treatment from you not only had their mental illnesses cured, but even their physical illnesses were cured. We speculate that you possess a series of healing abilities in both psychological and physiological aspects."
Ji Yuan understood. So that's what it was. Actually, he had known this day would come. He only had himself to blame for being too arrogant when he first used his abilities, which attracted the attention of S.H.I.E.L.D. and he had gone too far in treating the illness.
But this is what Coulson wanted to talk to him about today? It's probably not that simple. Ji Yuan guessed that he wanted him to work for S.H.I.E.L.D.
as predicted.
Seeing that Ji Yuan's expression didn't change much, Coulson couldn't help but admire the psychologist's composure, and said again:
"Actually, I have another mission today, which is to invite you to join S.H.I.E.L.D., hoping that you can do your part to protect human safety."
After saying that, Coulson looked into Ji Yuan's eyes with utmost sincerity.
Sensing Coulson's current emotions, Ji Yuan knew that he genuinely wanted him to join S.H.I.E.L.D.
"I refuse!"
Ji Yuan decisively refused to join S.H.I.E.L.D.
In fact, joining S.H.I.E.L.D. had its advantages for him, such as the opportunity to openly contact some superheroes or conceal his identity as Ultraman. He didn't want to reveal that he was Ultraman, although there was no danger to him if he was exposed, but he didn't like being looked at strangely every day.
Ji Yuan didn't have many ambitions. He wanted to get involved with superheroes, change some bad endings, or see the love and hate between superheroes and collect some progress updates along the way.
Joining S.H.I.E.L.D. seems like the most convenient option, but what you can't have is the most precious. If I easily joined S.H.I.E.L.D., wouldn't I seem cheap and definitely be bossed around? Although I wouldn't listen to it, having someone nagging me all the time would be a nuisance.
Ji Yuan could join, but he would need certain privileges. As far as he knew, this kind of healing ability was extremely rare in S.H.I.E.L.D.
"This...won't you reconsider? S.H.I.E.L.D. has a powerful security force. With the frequent appearance of superhumans and the emergence of the unknown Silver Giant, joining S.H.I.E.L.D. can guarantee your safety to the greatest extent."
Coulson desperately wanted Ji Yuan to join S.H.I.E.L.D., not only because of his outstanding abilities, but more importantly because he wouldn't have to pay for his medical treatment in the future.
Ji Yuan smiled, preparing to raise his bargaining chip: "I can join S.H.I.E.L.D., but you have to give me autonomy. Don't ask me to do missions. As for medical treatment, I'll do my best if I have time. As long as your superior gives me that kind of authority, I'll join."
"This... I need to report this..."
Coulson's expression was somewhat unpleasant. In an organization like S.H.I.E.L.D., autonomy was something hard to imagine. He could only try asking Fury, since he genuinely wanted Ji Yuan to join.
"Commander Fury..."
Coulson spoke quietly to Fury.
As Fury listened to Coulson's words on the other end of the phone, his brows furrowed slightly. He hated people with quick minds like this the most; they were always too calm, too fond of weighing pros and cons, and never thought about the world.
Fury didn't want to give the psychiatrist so much autonomy, but since the superpowers were his, what could he do? Looking at the hero of the era who modern medicine couldn't awaken on the hospital bed, he could only place his hopes on supernatural abilities.
"Well, it's just an extra paycheck, Coulson. Tell him I agreed."
