Chapter 1414 Blackmailed
As soon as he calmed his nerves and thought about the situation properly, there were more clues that he could piece together to make the situation make sense. Iris told him—that the twin rulers' whiskers would show the emotions they were currently experiencing.
It was the side-effect of the incense burning inside that room.
From the start, Rex observed and made mental notes about their whiskers.
Since they could suppress their fears, being someone who came from a royal standing, using the bleak aura their bodies emitted as a measurement would be way too inconsistent. Micro-expressions were also no use.
Royals tend to be hard to read.
Mainly due to the fact that they were taught to show nothing about what they felt inside.
However, their whiskers don't lie—that's what Iris told him.
Rex could use their whiskers to determine their emotions.
Serevan's whiskers were already pale blue from the start—which would mean that he was experiencing fear even before Rex stepped into the room. On the other hand, Serevia was different.
Her whiskers retained her natural fur color, pinkish, meaning she was calm and composed.
But, her whiskers turned blue nearing the end of their conversation.
Something scares her nearing the end to make her whiskers change color like that.
Nobody was inside other than us and those invisible creatures above us.
So what could she be scared of? It shouldn't be me because I let no killing intent leak out.
Rex didn't believe that Serevia and Serevan actually declined his offer because of reputation, he took it as nothing but a lie, and the change in Serevia's whiskers could help him crack, the real reason behind their decline.
In his mind, declining his offer was simply illogical.
Also, what does she mean by 'not all decisions are made for the reasons you think'?
Does she mean her decision to decline wasn't hers?
Just then, however, Rex's eyes widened as he came to a sudden realization.
His steps came to an abrupt stop.
Noticing him stopping out of nowhere, the two escorts also stopped and glanced at him.
It was the same with Iris.
She looked at him, tilting her head in confusion.
"Your Majesty, what's wrong?" Iris asked but she received no answer in return.
Despite her unanswered question, she could see the shock clearly etched on Rex's features.
On the other hand, Rex's mind worked as he began realizing what was happening earlier.
"It... It must be the Dark Angels..." He muttered inaudibly.
From the very start—it was clear that the Dark Angels were tricking Serevia—and Serevan by using the Origin Oath as their bargaining chip. Rex realized that to be true the moment Kazzir mentioned that Serevia had asked the Dark Angels to make the Origin Oath.
An oath to not attack them.
In the case where the Dark Angels triumphed, of course.
However, Serevia and Serevan weren't aware that they were tricked initially.
Both of them were under the impression that the oath was foolproof when it wasn't.
Since the Dark Angels were abandoning the First Light, they don't have an Origin anymore.
Or at least, their connection with the Origin became weaker.
If Rex had to guess, the more different the Dark Angels' appearance was, the weaker their connection became.
Once Serevia and Serevan knew about that, the air grew tense and if Rex remembered correctly, that was also when Serevia began to feel fear. Her fear was intense, but she shouldn't be.
Knowing about the Dark Angel's ploy would save her from making a grave mistake.
She should be glad instead.
Serevia could use this information to reposition her kingdom to a better one.
At least, that was what Rex would do in her position.
So the reason she suddenly became fearful must be because she was being monitored.
Rex was very positive that the Dark Angels were monitoring her.
It was a matter of time until another force came to the Tabaxis—and tried to strike a deal or coax them to change sides—the Dark Angels knew that. So in order to not have the Tabaxis betrayed them, they must have assigned a watcher.
Upon mounting the mutated black panther and leaving the premise, however, the mask fall off as Rex's expression contorted into a savage and feral one. He was silent, but the anger inside of him created a thick haze that distorted the air around him.
It was so choking that Iris didn't dare to utter a single word.
Now Iris knew what made her feel uneasy.
Obviously, Rex was angry as he was met with yet another failure.
He has never experienced consecutive failures as frequent as this.
Even though his plan was to settle the matters here so that he didn't need to worry about the others—while he was inside the Spirit Realm, the problems branched instead. He was seething to the point that his ability to remain stoic was overpowered.
Despite facing forward, Iris could hear the bony sound Rex made from gritting his teeth hard.
Every friction made her heart pound even harder.
'I can't help him in this but I can with his soul problem,' Iris thought as she sat silently behind. 'I don't know why he wanted to strengthen his soul but I have a guess. If my guess is correct, I might have one solution but... when should I say that to him?'
Seeing Rex was seething and furious, Iris wasn't sure when to start the conversation.
She was afraid but she knew she had to speak to him before they teleported back home.
Rex controlled the black panther to move forward aimlessly, he was still dwelling in his mind.
It took only for a moment for them to reach about a mile away.
Just then, however, a shiver ran down their spines and their bodies naturally straightened.
"Excuse me, can I ask for a direction?"
A voice that sounded very near suddenly greeted them from the side.
Hearing this, Rex glanced over to his right and had his eyes rounded at a surprising sight.
Looming beside them stood a hooded figure—shrouded entirely in a shadowy robe that revealed nothing of its form. Its features were completely hidden. Even with Rex and Iris perched atop the mutated black panther that was quite tall, the figure reached them.
Its head nearly matched their height—a presence that was unnaturally imposing.
Just its sheer size alone was chilling.
But what sent shivers down their spines was something else entirely.
Somehow, it had crept eerily close to them unnoticed.
Despite Rex's very sensitive senses as a Werewolf, despite the skills from the System that made it almost impossible to be sneaked upon, this hooded figure—somehow managed to reach not even three meters away from him.
Seeing that the two were unresponsive, the figure tilted its head a little.
"Can I ask for a direction?" It asked ahead.
Rex recovered from his daze and instantly prepared himself to react.
He found this figure odd and unsettling—it could also be hostile.
"Where do you want to go?" Rex asked—raising an eyebrow. "If you want to ask something, isn't it more polite to at least show us your face, instead of hiding inside that robe of yours? Pull down your hood and then I'll answer"
Upon hearing this, the figure remained motionless.
"I have a bad feeling about this person," Iris whispered. "I can't sense his energy"
As soon as Iris said that, Rex instantly used the System to scan the figure.
However, before the stat window could even appear, the figure already reached for his hood.
Rex—and Iris watched as the figure slowly pulled back its hood, unveiling a cascade of jet-black hair that seemed to devour the moonlight itself, casting an unsettling shadow around him.
His gaze remained lowered, avoiding theirs, an ominous silence stretching between them.
But then, with deliberate, almost predatory slowness—the figure raised his face.
He locked eyes with Rex.
And in that instant, Rex's breath hitched, caught in his throat.
A visceral chill gripping him as if the air itself had turned against him, siding with the figure.
Instead of seeing a face, Rex and Iris were greeted by a featureless face.
Not that the figure has no face, but there was this weird dark distortion, blurring his face.
System, why can't I see his face?!
What?!
