Chapter 1392 First Trench

Chapter 1392 First Trench

iris snooped in and took elder tilrith's place as the one who would view rex's past.

surely, she was annoyed by that.

her scowl showed that clearly for anyone to see but the warning she gave before iris leaped into the trench was a genuine warning. iris could tell that elder tilrith was really warning her, that peering into rex's past was not going to be easy.

regardless of wanting to know rex's weakness, elder tilrith was fitted for this role.

she and rex were in the same position so she could better endure rex's past.

older usually means wiser and stronger.

going with that, those who lived longer will always be wiser and stronger.

but in reality, that wasn't always the case.

time alone would not be able to make someone stronger or wiser, experience was the main driver, the only reason that saying exists was because living longer meant having a lot more opportunity to obtain experiences.

in this case, iris was way older than rex.

rex's entire life wouldn't even measure to 10% of the time she had been alive.

however, elder tilrith, or even iris herself knew that if comparing their experiences, she was not comparable to rex's experiences—at least in terms of power. due to that—elder tilrith's warning was genuine.

nevertheless, iris was not going to let elder tilrith obtain a weapon against rex.

'where am i...?' iris pondered.

once the darkness began to disappear around her, forming a foreign place, iris scanned her surroundings. she doesn't know—what to expect. in her eyes, rex was a person of obscure origin, he was an entity none had ever seen before.

even throughout the radical era and era of might, none resembled him.

because of that, she didn't know what trauma would rex hide deep inside of him.

'it seemed to be some kind of tent. a military tent?' iris pondered further.

just then, items, and even people began to materialize around her, forming some kind of an episode of rex's past. and one of them, a sharp-looking military officer—with many medals decorating his uniform spoke, "kill her and bring her to me. she will be the replacement..."

as soon as the officer said that, iris clutched her chest, feeling a sharp pain in her heart.

it felt like a searing hot knife was penetrating through her.

but even though she thought that she moved to clutch her chest, she didn't.

looking down, she realized that she was in the emperor's body.

'oh, my god...' iris gasped, the stabbing pain was so intense it stole her breath—crushing her chest like a vice. it was what rex felt at this moment, she was feeling it, directly. 'it hurts—so much, but he... he didn't even flinch? the emperor felt this much pain, but he was still able to keep his composure, and stood tall?!'

before she could adapt to the pain, her head automatically turned to the side.

"lieutenant, with all due respect, isn't that too much to ask for?!" a man on the side argued.

being in rex's memory, iris knew this man—his name was kyle.

following that, another man, a first sergeant called fury added, "is that necessary?"

bam!

suddenly, the officer, lieutenant beard stood up and slammed his hand against the table.

he glared at fury, forcing fury to look down in response.

pausing for a second, the lieutenant then turned back towards kyle and iris.

"your comrade goes against a direct order! he sneaked in the night—and smuggled, that girl whose fate has been dictated by me!" he snarled—he was breathing hard like a bull. "if both of you refuse to do this, there will be massive consequences!"

"but sir, she's only a young girl..." kyle retorted but his voice was now weaker.

pointing at kyle, lieutenant beard went over his desk and stood an inch away from him.

"and that girl has no family, no relatives—she has nothing in this world making her perfect to be sacrificed" the lieutenant retorted, his eyes blazed with fury. "ghouls liked fresh, and also young meat—this is to ensure the operation will be a success. what your comrade did risked thousands if not millions of lives, do you understand?!"

kyle has nothing else to say, he wanted to defend what edward did but he couldn't.

he feared the consequences greatly.

making another step forward, lieutenant beard looked at kyle directly in the eyes.

"...?"

"if you keep refusing, the lieutenant will make edward be the one to do it"

wiping the blood trickling down from her nose, iris glanced at kyle, "you and i know that if he does it—if edward does it, he will not be able to recover. to stop that from happening, i need to step in"

upon hearing this, kyle's expression stiffened.

despite his anger, what iris said was undeniable—the lieutenant is short-tempered.

he drew a hand across his forehead, the tension clear, in the furrow of his brow—before he leaned heavily against the wall. both hands dropped to his hips as a bitter chuckle escaped his lips, "we got the worst fucking job—and now, before our departure, this happened... for fuck's sake"

iris stood up and patted her clothes, "come on, let's end this quickly before he comes back"

"who would be the one to do it...?" kyle asked hesitantly.

pausing for a second, iris sighed, "i'll do it. just call her..."

"and...?" kyle asked again, stopping iris at the door. "what should we tell him?"

"never mention this again" iris replied before leaving the room—kyle followed behind her.

moments later.

it was silent inside the noob box, the greenhorns are sleeping already.

only the occasional night duty people could be seen walking around, only a few of them.

peeking from the corner of the cafeteria building was a young girl, she checked the coast— and nodded when she found that it was clear. emerging from the corner, she brought a tray of food and power walked towards another building.

she made sure nobody saw her before moving to this building.

it was secluded and frankly speaking, looks abandoned.

a young girl like her would be scared but she instead has an excited smile on her face.

upon reaching the building, she went to the backside corridor and found the red door—the place that she regularly visits. knocking on the door in a code, the red door was then open, revealing kyle.

"come in..." kyle said, he couldn't look at the young girl in the eyes.

nodding, the young girl stepped inside, and placed the tray on the side, "it's very late," she murmured—placing her hands on her hips in a reprimanding manner. "did you guys get into trouble again and get punished?"

both of them were now inside a small room, there were three more red doors there.

glancing at one of them—the young girl tilted her head, "where's brother rex? i thought you asked me to bring more because you and brother rex got punished again. brother edward is the decent one so i doubted he's being punished" read exclusive content at empire

hearing this, a tear drizzled down kyle's cheek.

naturally, the young girl was confused and surprised by this.

in her eyes, kyle, edward, and rex were too tough to show emotions like this.

she never saw any of them whimper much less cry like this.

"get this over with, rex..." kyle suddenly whispered, looking away from the young girl.

just as she was about to ask what was going on, a figure appeared from the shadow of the corner, iris emerged. seeing her, the young girl smiled, but noticed her knuckles were badly wounded, they were still bleeding.

"did you hurt yourself again?" the girl shook her head. "come here, i brought bandages"

as she approached, iris stopped her.

"stop there," iris said, lifting her trembling hand.

feeling the odd and choking air, the young girl shook her head as there must be some sort of a misunderstanding. rex, edward—and kyle would never hurt her, but her thoughts halted as she saw a handgun in rex's hand.

even then, the young girl still believed in them, this must be a prank.

with one fluid motion, iris pointed the handgun toward her forehead and cocked it.

her arm felt weak when she did this, the young girl's eyes, full of unwavering belief—pierced her like a blade. as she prepared to shoot, the pain in her chest was unbearable, a silent wail of anguish that threatened to break her.

seeing iris preparing to shoot, the young girl's smile was broken.

"brother rex..." she whispered. "why?"

"forgive me," iris whispered before turning her face away.

bang!
