Chapter 15 Cole Weeks
Chapter 15 Cole Weeks
Without directly refuting Carl's question, Cole confidently snapped his fingers, then glanced at a dead bird at the long table. Suren keenly observed that silver threads appeared in Cole's pupils.
About two seconds later, Cole pointed at the Deathbird and said in a low voice, "This guy will fall down when he gets up."
The instant after hearing Cole's words, Suren's "Source of Knowledge" trembled violently, and this strange feeling made him subconsciously look at Karl.
Carl remained calm, as if he hadn't noticed anything.
This made Suren realize that this might be a hint from the "Revelation," meaning that something was hidden behind Cole's so-called foresight.
Carl grinned at Cole: "Your little tricks won't work. You've definitely colluded with that guy."
"I'm sorry to disappoint you, but my relationship with that guy is terrible, so terrible that you can easily find out by asking around." Cole seemed to have anticipated Carl's suspicions.
Suren pointed at the man and asked, "If you really can see the future, what would happen if we went to warn him now?"
Before Suren could finish speaking, Karl eagerly walked straight towards the deathbird.
Suren noticed that Cole, who had been looking at her, had turned his head anxiously toward Karl, as if afraid of missing something.
It's unclear what Karl said to the other party, but the Deathbird seemed a bit angry, stood up and pushed Karl, but lost its balance and fell to the ground.
Suren frowned, looking at Cole who was now facing him again: "In the future you foresaw, did he fall because of Karl?"
"No, all I foresee in the future is him falling. The future cannot be changed, and your friend's attempt to interfere with it will only bring it forward," Cole shrugged, adding, "or even worse."
Suren looked at the Deathbird arguing with Karl, stroked his chin thoughtfully.
Cole watched Suren with great interest, waiting for him to ask the question he had already answered a thousand times, and then he would give his prepared answer.
Finally, as he had been waiting, Suren spoke, but Suren's question was completely unexpected.
"What if Carl, my friend, didn't know about the future you predicted? In that case, would that future still be fixed?"
Cole's smile froze for a moment, then he replied casually, "No one can change the predetermined future."
Suren didn't say anything more, quietly watching Karl who was still arguing, as if nothing had just happened.
Not long after, Carl returned, somewhat annoyed, muttering, "I kindly reminded him, and he still had to push me. How rude of him."
Seemingly to hide his embarrassment, he pointed at Cole and asked, "If the foresight to predict the future can't be changed, then isn't this ability completely useless?"
"No, at least we can change the process, and that's only part of my ability."
Finding the source and mitigating risks are both within my capabilities. Moreover, I have extensive experience from numerous battles; even in normal combat, I possess considerable fighting strength.” Cole didn't pause for a moment, as if he had rehearsed the answer countless times in his mind. Seemingly to dispel their doubts, he added, “Since you two are both newcomers, you must be members who severely lack direct combat skills. My abilities are perfectly suited for exploration missions; I think you should consider it.”
Carl glanced at Suren, and seeing that Suren didn't speak, he agreed. After arranging to meet Cole at the address left by Professor Derwent, Carl took off the bounty and went to Lawrence to make a record.
As Cole walked out of the duty station, the smile on his face vanished completely. His lips moved slightly, as if he were talking to himself, his voice so soft that only he could hear it.
Inside the room, Suren watched Cole's departing figure and murmured softly, "Foresight?"
A faint smile appeared on Suren's lips. She then looked away and turned to walk towards Karl.
Carl was registering for a mission with Lawrence when Lawrence took the mission notice from Carl and asked in surprise:
"The task you chose is quite difficult, and you're doing it all by yourself?"
Carl pointed to Suren, who was walking over: "Of course not. Besides the two of us, there's another guy named Cole Weeks."
Lawrence raised an eyebrow and solemnly warned the two, "This guy is notoriously unlucky. Many of the people who went on missions with him have died in accidents. I suggest you think carefully."
Carl seemed oblivious to Lawrence's implication, and Suren simply shrugged, replying nonchalantly, "I've always been lucky; maybe it's this Cole who's going to be unlucky."
Seeing this, Lawrence stopped trying to dissuade him, shook his head, and then registered the mission.
Some time later, Suren and Karl were walking down St. Wood Street in the church district, chatting casually.
Suren had her own reasons for agreeing to Cole's joining, but Carl seemed indifferent, which made Suren quite curious.
After receiving the answer that "because the other party is a hunting dog and has signed a contract, it is impossible for it to harm us," Suren made a decision in his heart: perhaps he would need to teach Karl a lesson alone in the future, so that he would know what the wickedness of the world is.
Professor De Went's residence was very close to the Libra Cathedral, which was located in a luxurious residential area.
Most of the residents here are so-called nobles, but they are rather impoverished and certainly cannot compare to the nobles of the duchy's capital, "Libraton".
Even so, Professor De Winter was considered a relatively wealthy man in Loren. After all, in this era, a professor who had left the church couldn't really support his research without some family fortune.
Suren asked with some curiosity, "Karl, how do you know Professor Derwent?"
Carl grinned, flashing his signature smile: "That's because my diligence and studiousness have earned the professor's appreciation!"
Suren didn't speak, but just stared at Karl quietly, as if waiting for something.
Carl gave up, shrugging, "Alright, alright, actually it's because I often run into Professor Derwent when I go to a bookstore. Over time, we naturally got to know each other, and I even asked him a question yesterday."
Suren knew things weren't going to be easy; it was probably because Karl had been persistently pestering the professor. However, the professor's character was at least somewhat acceptable, given his willingness to mentor a child from a poor background like Karl.
After walking for about ten more minutes, the two finally arrived at the professor's residence, a sturdy three-story red brick house. Judging from the decoration, Professor De Went had quite good taste.
Cole Weeks was leaning against the door, looking like he had been waiting for a long time.
He didn't complain, but instead gave that smile that made Suren feel a little nauseous, bent down, and extended his right hand in a gesture of invitation.
