“What are you talking about, kid!” Mother Xiao retorted, not amused.
Xiao Han chuckled.
Mother Xiao took out five hundred yuan and gave it to Xiao Han, “Go buy some things for Old Liu and Auntie Zhang.”
“Okay!” Xiao Han nodded.
With that, he immediately pocketed the five hundred yuan and headed out.
Xiao Han decided to first check on Old Liu’s situation since he had rarely seen him at the factory lately and didn’t know whether it was because he was busy or for some other reason. Moreover, seeing the situation for himself would help in understanding what Old Liu’s family was in need of. After all, none of the families in the factory were wealthy.
Giving something useless out of the blue could end up doing more harm than good.
Old Liu’s home was near the factory entrance, in the third row of bungalows, behind which they had built a simple shack. Only Old Liu and his wife lived there.
When Xiao Han arrived at Old Liu’s door, the gate was tightly shut, and there were no couplets pasted on it.
After a long wait, Old Liu came to open the door, wrapped in a thick coat. It had been over a month since Xiao Han had seen him, and Old Liu seemed to have aged even more.
“Old Liu, what... what’s this?” Xiao Han looked at him, puzzled.
“Xiao Han, are you looking for me for something?” Old Liu coughed twice.
“Old Liu, are you sick?” Xiao Han asked urgently.
“Oh, caught a cold,” Old Liu replied, his complexion pale. He chuckled and said, “When you get old, sickness follows. Who knows, I might just straighten my legs and kick the bucket any day now.”
Old Liu seemed to be in much better spirits upon seeing Xiao Han.
“Look at what you’re saying,” Xiao Han laughed and said, “Yama’s tiny temple can’t accommodate you.”
“Haha!” Old Liu laughed even harder, “Come on in and sit. Don’t just stand around outside.”@@@@
“Okay!” Xiao Han nodded.
Xiao Han hurried inside and it seemed that Grandma Liu was also lying down in the house.
“Old man, is Grandma Liu sick, too?” Xiao Han was taken aback.
“What does that mean?” Xiao Han frowned.
“She was brought in on time, which saved her life. Otherwise, it would have been hard for the patient to make it through the night,” the doctor looked at Xiao Han and said, “Although she has been pulled back from the brink, her body is still very weak. She needs nutritional injections to support her meridians. For now, she should be admitted to the hospital for observation and treatment.”
“Okay, okay!” Xiao Han nodded.
“Then you should go and pay an initial hospitalization fee of five thousand yuan,” the doctor advised.
“Alright, alright!” Xiao Han immediately nodded in agreement.
The doctor seemed very calm. Xiao Han left the doctor’s office.
“Xiao Han, how is it?” Old Liu asked anxiously.
“The doctor says it’s pretty good, not serious!” Xiao Han smiled and said, “She’ll be able to leave the ICU soon, but she needs to stay in the hospital for a few days for observation!”
“If it’s not serious, then why does she need to be hospitalized for observation?” Old Liu asked anxiously.
“This...” Xiao Han was taken aback, quickly explaining, “It’s because Grandma’s body is too weak, she needs nutritional injections these few days.”
“How much will that cost?” Old Liu panicked.
“Don’t worry about it. It won’t be much!” Xiao Han shook his head.
Li Dapang came back from the payment window, cursing all the way, “That shrew at the payment window is just awful. The doctor said to pay five thousand, but she insisted on six thousand.”
“That much!” Old Liu’s eyes widened.
“Old man, this amount of money is nothing!” Xiao Han hurriedly said, “Besides, when she is discharged, there’ll be a refund. It’s just a deposit.”
“Isn’t this too expensive?” Old Liu seemed very reluctant.
“What is this amount of money compared to Grandma’s life?” Xiao Han said earnestly, “The doctor just said, if we had continued to wait, Grandma wouldn’t have survived the night.”
Upon hearing this, Old Liu fell silent.
He squatted outside the ward by himself, his hands cradling his head. It was true, he and his partner had been married for over fifty years, and he never provided her with a single good day. Throughout their life together, they endured much hardship and suffering.
The couple had a deep affection for each other, their children lived away from home, each with their own families and careers, unable to take care of the elderly at home. Thus, the old couple could only rely on each other. Read exclusive adventures at empire
With a loud wail, Old Liu suddenly burst into tears.
