Chapter 40 Breaking into the Bedroom
Chapter 40 Breaking into the Bedroom
Silver Leaf's fingers gently caressed the edge of the leaf.
"The person wearing it can become invisible in the Sacred Tree Forest for half an hour."
There was a silence in the room for about three seconds, then Chu Sheng and Arthur spoke almost simultaneously: "Why didn't you say so sooner?"
Chu Sheng had a look on his face that said, "How many more treasures are you hiding?"
Yinye blushed and stammered out a sentence.
"Because it's not something to be proud of." She placed the leaf back on the table, crossing her arms over her chest. "This amulet was used by us grey elves...used to..."
She couldn't continue.
"What will it be used for?" Chu Sheng pressed.
Silverleaf's face flushed red, and her voice lowered: "Because... well... the Grey Elves used to be poor. The Elves occupied the best parts of the Sacred Tree Forest, while the soil in the Grey Domain was barren, and nothing grew well. So... sometimes..."
"Sometimes I...go to the Elven territory..." Silverleaf's voice trailed off, "...to get something."
"Take it?" Chu Sheng raised an eyebrow.
"It's a loan! The kind of loan that wasn't returned!" Yinye exclaimed angrily. "Why are you asking this! That happened hundreds of years ago! What does it have to do with me!"
"So this amulet is used to steal things from the elves," Arthur added from the side.
Silver Leaf's pointed ears trembled with anger: "Can't you use a different word?!"
"borrow?"
"...Alright."
"Is there any difference?"
"The difference is," Silverleaf said, sticking out her neck, "'Borrowing' means taking something temporarily, while 'stealing' means never returning it. We grey elves always return what we borrow..."
"Did you return it?" Ella asked curiously as she leaned closer.
Yinye opened her mouth.
"...Some have been returned." Her voice was so soft it was almost inaudible. "Most haven't been returned."
"What are the consequences of using it?" Arthur asked.
"The price isn't high. It's just that you can't speak, run too fast, or touch an elf's body while invisible." A hint of guilt flashed in Silverleaf's emerald green eyes.
"That's it?"
"That's all."
"Then why are you making that face?"
Yinye was silent for a moment: "Because when my grandmother gave me the amulet, she said that I should not use it unless absolutely necessary, as it would be shameful."
Chu Sheng reached out and picked up the amulet on the table.
"I'll go," he said.
"You're going to the Queen's bedchamber alone?" Arthur's tone was full of opposition.
"She gave me the note," Chu Sheng nodded. "Since she gave it to me, the best way is to ask her directly. It's better to hear it from her own mouth than to keep guessing here."
"What if the note is fake?" Yinye asked, still worried. "What if it's a trap, waiting for you to sneak past it?"
"Then why didn't you just make your move at the banquet?" Chu Sheng countered. "Back then, we were at our lowest level of vigilance. If she really wanted to make a move, we wouldn't have been able to escape. Why wait until now?"
Arthur didn't say anything. She understood the reasoning, but she just didn't want Chu Sheng to take the risk alone.
Chu Sheng continued, "I'll only be there for fifteen minutes. I'll come back within fifteen minutes, regardless of whether I've asked anything or not. If anything unexpected happens, I'll try to send a signal. Once you see the signal, leave immediately and don't worry about me."
"No way." Arthur's ahoge (cowlick) immediately stood on end. "I'm your contracted knight, it's my turn to go."
"You are a knight of the Imperial Knights, Arthur. If the elves were to accuse you of trespassing in the Queen's chambers, it would be a matter of face for the Imperial Knights and could escalate into a diplomatic conflict between the Empire and the elves."
Chu Sheng said earnestly.
"But I'm different. I've never been to the center of the Empire, I'm nameless and unknown, so it's normal that you don't know what I'm doing on my own."
Arthur didn't object anymore. She knew Chu Sheng's personality; once he made a decision, not even ten Ellas could change his mind.
She ignited a ray of holy light with her finger and drew a line out of thin air.
"There are three main roads and seven side roads from the guest quarters to the Queen's bedroom. The main roads are guarded by elven guards on rotation, so don't take them. Take the leftmost side road, go around behind the honey vine cellar, and there's a tree hole there. Go through the tree hole and you'll find a depression. On the other side of the depression is the side wall of the Queen's bedroom."
She paused for a moment, then added, "There's a three-minute break between shifts in front of the honey vine cellar. Three minutes is enough for you to get through the tree hole."
"How do you know so much?" Chu Sheng couldn't help but ask.
"My eyes weren't glued to his collar," Arthur rolled his eyes at him. "Scouting out new places first is an essential skill for the Knights."
Chu Sheng scratched his head awkwardly and changed the subject: "Then I'll be going now?"
"We'll wait for you to come back," Arthur said softly.
Chu Sheng nodded heavily and pushed open the door.
The moonlight and the glow of the moss illuminated the entire royal court.
Chu Sheng walked along the edge of the moss, the amulet affixed to his chest, emitting a faint halo.
He looked down at his hands, which seemed to be shrouded in a thin mist. Moonlight shone through his fingers onto the ground, casting shadows that were so faint as to be almost invisible.
The first patrol team of Pokémon appeared in front of the suspension bridge in front of the Honeywitch Cavern.
The three elves were dressed in light leather armor and carried glowing crystal lanterns.
Chu Sheng lay in the shadows of the cellar as three elves passed over the suspension bridge three meters in front of him, the light from the crystal lanterns sweeping across his face without lingering.
The amulet was effective, but they had no idea!
But he waited until the last elf disappeared on the other side of the suspension bridge before emerging from the shadows.
The fork in the road marked by Arthur was just a dozen steps ahead. To the left was a path completely covered by vines, which hung down like a green curtain.
Chu Sheng carefully parted the vines and then carefully put them back.
The path was narrow, the soil soft and damp underfoot, making no sound when stepped on. On both sides of the path were thick, ancient tree roots, and glowing mushrooms grew in the crevices of the roots, their pale purple fluorescence illuminating the path in a dim, eerie light.
After walking about a hundred steps, a tree hollow appeared ahead, the entrance only half a person's height. Chu Sheng squatted down and silently crawled into the tree hollow.
The exit of the tree hollow was hidden by a large patch of ferns. He peeked out through the gaps in the fern leaves and saw that it was indeed a depression outside.
The depression was full of glowing mushrooms, and several glowing beetles were perched on the caps of the mushrooms, their wings opening and closing.
The Queen's bedroom is located opposite the depression.
The palace was built inside the largest ancient tree in the royal court, its trunk so thick that it would take hundreds of people holding hands to encircle it. Four elven guards stood on the steps of the palace's main entrance, their silver spears gleaming coldly in the moonlight.
