Chapter 60 The Despicable Things Hidden Behind the Glamour
"Come on! Take your bowl and come with me, I'll go to the kitchen and get you some."
The older woman who came to serve the dishes heard this and warmly greeted An'an, telling her to take the bowl and follow her. Seeing that An'an didn't move, she then spoke to the man sitting silently to the side:
"Oh, it's alright, young man, make yourself at home, don't be shy."
“When the children here are hungry, we go to the kitchen early to get them a bowl of food, and then let them play by themselves. There are plenty of children here. It’s just a bowl of soup. What are they afraid of?”
"No matter how tough things get, we can't let the children suffer, can we?"
“Yes!” An’an, holding her bowl, agreed confidently, waiting for the man's command to drink her soup.
"Oh my, you're quite a fun kid!"
"I'll go! I've almost eaten too." Zhao Jingtang was recovering from her injuries and couldn't eat much meat, so she got up and took An'an to the kitchen.
Zhao Jingtang carried An'an through the bustling crowd and into the smoke-filled outer perimeter of the kitchen. Two dismantled door panels served as makeshift workbenches, upon which sat several large basins of different vegetables.
Steaming hot, two young men were serving dishes, placing them on a tray beside them, waiting for the food to be served. It reminded them of the dishes they had eaten at the previous table, which were delivered to them step by step in the same manner.
"Hey~, Dali! Give the baby a spoonful of soup~"
The older woman, holding a bowl, stepped forward and spoke to a middle-aged man in a white short-sleeved shirt in the corner.
Zhao Jingtang stood to the side, holding the child, watching from a distance. She didn't approach; after all, it was better to avoid trouble for outsiders, especially regarding food.
I just watched as the man, with an inscrutable expression, pondered all the possibilities that might have occurred.
Finally, he took the bowl, pulled over a small stool, and fed An'an the soup. An'an squatted in front of him, not quite understanding why he was doing this.
She saw the man's resolute face wink at her, and she knowingly fiddled with her fingers, replying with an "OK." This was the "tacit understanding" they had established last time when Zhao Jingtang helped her hide the puppy.
An'an obediently squatted until she got a little tired, then sat directly on the man's lap and casually drank the soup he fed her.
"Young man, your kid is so clever, what do you eat to grow so tall? Give some to my son later, hahaha!"
A chubby man, having finished chopping vegetables, was resting nearby when he saw this and joked...
No, the child is very sensible and is growing up to be adorable.
An'an understood what he meant and happily returned the man's look with a "Great!" expression.
"Haha, that's true! Your child is really cuter than most. How about it? Isn't our soup delicious?"
"It's really good. It's rare to have such an authentic soup. All the ingredients are top-notch!"
"That's right. Our bone broth is made from freshly slaughtered sheep every morning. These sheep are all grass-fed, unlike the sheep in your city that are raised on feed and hormones."
"Yes, we only got to experience this natural and organic stuff here because it's a rare treat."
"By the way, brother, that guy serving the soup doesn't seem to be from around here. Can outsiders help in the kitchen? We should have brought the kids along to experience it."
"Sigh~, no, that's not true. Only we locals have this kind of cooking style. That Dali guy isn't from here either!"
"Then how come he's allowed to come and help in the kitchen? Is it because my older brother doesn't want to scare me when I'm working?"
"Hey! No way, this kind of work isn't exactly a good thing. That Dali guy married Wanyi, a widow from our village, so he's basically a son-in-law. All the men in the family come to help with the cooking, and that's why he's here."
Seeing the man's disdainful look, Zhao Jingtang felt a mix of emotions, thinking, "Is this the life you want?"
After exchanging a few more words, Zhao Jingtang grew even more anxious to confirm things. At that moment, he suddenly felt less eager to find his elder brother, Zhao Yuantang.
Looking at the child in his arms, he absentmindedly filled another bowl with soup and led the people back.
After they got back, everyone had almost finished eating. Lu Jing pointed to the soup that had just been served and teased them for having the soup they were drinking at the wrong time.
