Chapter 48: Wake up, everyone!
Chapter 48: Wake up, everyone!
Tonight is destined to be a sleepless night. Conan is also having trouble sleeping tonight, for no other reason than the person sleeping soundly next to him.
It was a stormy night. As mentioned earlier, Ran is usually a timid girl, so she slept in the same bed with Conan, claiming that she was worried Conan would be too scared to sleep by the thunder.
The more Conan thought about it, the less his mind worked, and his face turned so red that he didn't hear a thing outside the window.
It wasn't until Conan instinctively sensed something was wrong and looked to the side that he realized something was amiss.
A black-robed man, his face completely wrapped in bandages and wielding a giant axe, was about to strike with deadly force.
Conan quickly kicked Ran away, causing the bandaged man's axe to miss its target.
Ran Mouri has an enviable quality of sleep, especially among young people who have developed bad habits and can't sleep at night. She was kicked and her bed was overturned by an axe, but she still didn't wake up.
After failing in his first attack, the bandaged man tried to finish him off, but Conan, who was holding him around the waist, stopped him and prevented him from succeeding.
However, Conan, dressed in his pajamas, was no match for a corgi in terms of fighting ability. Even if he unleashed his power at this moment, it wouldn't change the fact that he was still a primary school student. He was thrown away by the bandaged monster with a wave of his hand.
With only the voice changer bow tie at hand, Conan had no choice but to try his best, turning the volume up to the maximum in an attempt to wake the sleeping Ran.
With a deafening scream, Akutagawa Hiko burst through the door and delivered a flying kick to the bandaged monster's side. Although he held back his strength, the man was still sent flying out of the window.
There is certainly no danger to life, but it is hard to guarantee how serious the injury will be.
Looking out the window, I didn't see a single person.
Conan quickly got up and realized that he had twisted his ankle during his heroic fight with the thug (which he was easily subdued).
Unable to continue, Conan turned his hopeful gaze to Akutagawa Hiko: "Quick, chase after him! That bandaged man we saw this afternoon is trying to kill Ran!"
However, Conan quickly noticed that Akutagawa Hiko was acting strangely.
Akutagawa Hiko turned his head, and Conan was startled. What kind of eyes were those? Pure white eyes with a holy aura, but the bulging veins around the eye sockets looked slightly ferocious.
He rubbed his eyes again, and everything had returned to normal. Akutagawa Hiko's voice was filled with exhaustion: "We can't catch up."
Conan knew that Akutagawa Hiko was no ordinary person. He had read novels with themes of fantasy cultivation and supernatural powers, but he was quickly discouraged by their illogical and unscientific content.
Why does Akutagawa Hiko look like he's gone wrong in his training?!
Conan's first reaction was to be moved. In those novels, abruptly interrupting one's training could lead to serious problems, but Akutagawa Hiko came to the rescue immediately. This selfless friendship is truly touching.
My second reaction was worry; Akutagawa Hiko's reaction didn't seem like he was alright.
However, Ran had already woken up, and Sonoko, sensing something was wrong, pushed open another door and came in. Everyone sleeping on the second floor was awakened and gathered together. Now was clearly not the time to ask this question.
"What! Xiaolan, you were attacked by that bandaged monster!!"
Sonoko screamed in terror, and to her surprise, everyone except her sister Ayako Suzuki said they had seen the bandaged man on the suspension bridge.
Akutagawa looked at Takahashi Ryoichi, who seemed to be fine and had quickly regained his beer belly and rejoined the group, and couldn't help but marvel at the wonder of Conan's physique.
If an ordinary person were kicked down the stairs like that, they would probably be left with a disability.
However, the thought that this person could easily dismember a body with just an axe made those killers who used chainsaws look utterly ashamed, made Akutagawa Hiko feel relieved.
When Takahashi Ryoichi noticed Akutagawa Hiko staring at him, his whole body stiffened, especially his side where he had been kicked, which was still throbbing with pain. He could only endure it to avoid being discovered.
With such a dangerous person lurking near the villa, no one could sleep anymore. They all expressed their determination to catch the person. This time it was Xiaolan who was attacked, but who knows who it might be next time.
Ryoichi Takahashi suggested calling the police first, but there was no signal at all. Upon closer inspection, he realized the phone line had been cut. Ryoichi ran out of the house crying, "Waaaaah!"
"Takahashi!!"
"It must have been that bandaged man who cut the phone line! I don't want to die—!"
The group chased after them to the edge of the mountain stream and saw Takahashi Ryoichi standing there blankly. When they looked up, they too froze in place.
Akutagawa Hiko walked to the wooden stake, looked at the messy hacking marks, and concluded: "The suspension bridge was cut down by someone."
Ryoichi Takahashi was even more terrified: "It was him...it was him...it must be that bandaged weirdo again!!"
Thinking of Chikako Ikeda, who seemed to have been forgotten and reduced to fragments of her past, Hiko Akutagawa spoke up, reminding him, "Why didn't Ms. Ikeda come out with us?"
Thinking of the bandaged stranger still lingering near the villa, everyone felt a bad premonition and hurried back to the second floor of the villa.
There was no response to knocking, and the door wasn't locked; it opened easily with a push.
At this point, they didn't care that it was inappropriate for a boy to enter a lady's room without saying hello. The group rushed in, but they didn't see Chikako Ikeda.
"There were no signs of a struggle in the room, and Ms. Ikeda had changed into her pajamas and left the room voluntarily."
Ayako Suzuki looked very worried: "Why did Chikako leave so late?"
Like a reliable detective, Akutagawa asked the villa's owner, "I didn't see Ms. Ikeda's slippers at the front entrance. Does the villa have another exit?"
After learning that the villa did indeed have a back door, except for Takahashi Ryoichi, who pretended to be out of breath and wanted to stay and do something sneaky, everyone went to the back door and found a pair of slippers placed steadily.
Ota Masaru looked at Akutagawa Hiko with surprise: "You're quite clever. It seems Ikeda really did walk out of the villa on his own."
Sonoko Suzuki, looking quite proud, raised her head and said, "Of course! Akutagawa is a very famous and amazing detective!"
Before Ota Katsumasa could say anything, Takahashi Ryoichi from the second floor suddenly shouted, "Who—who's there?!"
The square-faced man quickly asked, "What's wrong?!"
Ryoichi Takahashi shouted back, "There's someone at the window downstairs!!"
Everyone turned to look, and saw the bandaged man, whom they had all met once before, and Chikako Ikeda, with a terrified expression, flash past the window.
Before anyone could chase after them, the lights inside the villa suddenly flickered, and then everything went dark...
